Treatment - Reflexology Therapy

Reflexologists are able to target and influence particular areas of the anatomy and encourage a range of responses.

Not only is the entire procedure completely relaxing it can offer real remedial benefits from pain relief to increased blood flow and healing which can be particularly beneficial to post-operative patients. The unique ability to isolate and excite specific areas of the body means that the applications of reflexology are all encompassing and its palliative effects have been employed in areas as diverse as maternity care and as a complementary therapy during cancer treatment.

If you have been continually frustrated with the limitations of conservative medicine reflexology could provide the relief you have been looking for. More and more clients come to our London Massage clinics worried that no matter what their GP might recommend nothing seems to alleviate their discomfort. Perhaps your condition is one of more general fatigue or sense of ill health; through the thorough and expert assessment of our reflexologists we can help to identify and allay problems that range from gout, hypertension or insomnia to headaches, kidney function and diabetes. There is no need to suffer in silence or endure a life time of pain or discomfort; our friendly and knowledgeable practitioners can provide a personalised and thoughtful service that gets to the root of your problem.

You have over seven thousand nerve endings in your feet, one of the most sensitive areas of the human body. Reflexology is an alternative therapy that explores the relationship between these nerve endings and their interdependent correlation with the major organs. This kind of alternative massage therapy is based upon the flow of energies that are channelled throughout the body and the manipulation of the feet with a series of thumb finger and hand techniques to control and encourage these energies. During a treatment the nerve endings are stimulated by sending signals to the brain which relays signals to the corresponding organ. Reflexology is fast becoming one of the most popular treatments we offer in our London massage clinics and many clients often report incredible results.

Can Reflexology Help or Cure my Symptoms?

Like so many aspects of our world the true reason behind the efficacy of reflexology largely still remains a mystery. At Nico Tailored Therapies are faith lay in the practical application of practices that work, that we have tried and tested and that tangibly benefit the lives of our clients. As a treatment born out of the methods of Imperial China and Ancient Egypt we regard reflexology as a real and potentially life changing therapy.

What happens in a session?

Firstly we will conduct a short health questionnaire in order to ensure that each individual client receives the treatment most effective and appropriate to them. In our comfortable therapy rooms the client is asked to remove their shoes and socks and to relax on the massage couch or chair.

Possible Reactions To Treatment

Many people describe achieving an overall sense of well being and or dramatic improvement of a particular condition or complaint. It is not unusual to experience various bodily sensations during the treatment such is the influence of the internal energies upon the self.

As impulses are transmitted from the brain throughout the body other reactions known as contra-actions may be encountered and although seeming slightly unpleasant are very good indicators that you are reacting well to the treatment. Reflexology aims to release toxins and pollutants from within the body in order to improve the health and elevate the mood of an individual person; these contra-actions are considered as the visible or internal expulsion of these toxins.

Common contra-actions can include:
  • Increased passing of urine; this may be more frequent may look a slightly different colour or smell more pungent.
  • Increased bowel activity.
  • A headache due to the release of toxins within the body.
  • Some people feel extremely thirsty after a treatment and we always advise that clients hydrate well following a reflexology session.
  • Clients often feel a physical change in temperature, some people feel cold and conversely others describe a warming sensation. These fluctuations can continue a little while after treatment but will return to normal in a short time.
  • It is also not unusual for people to experience heightened emotional responses some clients spontaneously bursting into laughter, crying, feeling particularly sensitive or fatigued.

History

One of the most famous historical records of the use of reflexology was found in the tomb of Ankhmahor where images depicted in the tomb are believed to depict the manipulation of the hands and feet for therapeutic benefit. Ankhmahor was the physician to the Egyptian royal family in 2500BC and one of the most respected medical practitioners of his age.

Different types of reflexology have been adopted by a diverse range of cultures for centuries, particularly in China and there is also evidence of its use in India and North America. The system was progressed and popularized in the modern era through the work of American, Dr. William H. Fitzgerald who explored its possibilities in the use of pain relief. Taking up the mantle of Fitzgerlad, Dr Joe Shelby Riley and, perhaps most famously, Eunice Ingham developed and refined the methods that are most commonly practised today. A British woman, Doreen Bayly went to work with Eunice Ingham and brought Reflexology to the UK in 1960.

I had quite a lot of liposuction done during March 2010 (after saving for about 20 years!) and afterwards I suffered with fluid retention quite badly. It made me groggy and really affected the way my body looked. My surgeon recommended lymphatic drainage massage and not knowing the first place to look I resorted to google - which found me Nico. I had 5 sessions with Nico - it was very light and although ached at times I know this was more to do with my internal healing than the actual massage. At the end I went back to see my surgeon. He was absolutely delighted with the results - the fluid lumpy bits had all but disappeared and my skin tone was a million times better. The sessions were also very useful for keeping up my motivation for exercise and healthy eating as Nico does the same and certainly focused my concentration on these areas!! Combining exercise, massage and eating properly, I have lost a total of 1st 4 pounds and 27cm from all over my body. If that's not worth a massage then I don't know what is!!!
